The Complete Brother Susan

Here it is, all four songs from the Winter and Spring of '74.

The first, is Ride Ride Ride b/w Flash. Both are solid numbers with a great guitar sound but are missin' that extra somethin' to put 'em over the edge as a memorable song.

Their 2nd single, See My Fingers Fly b/w Full Blooded Natural Man is where the kick into high gear. SMFF's 50's Doo Wop vibe harkens to Sisters' "There's A Raver Coming Home", which can't be bad.

Gang-Run, Run, Run

Sorry for the long wait, but this one is worth it.

From what I have gathered, Gang were a group of Teens in a BCR's kinda' mold. They have another single which is great too called "Lightning Lady" which I heard thanks to fellow Collector Tim Purr on one of his great comps.

This one starts off with a great drum sound and then a fuzzed out bass and guitar join the fray. Beach Boy like harmonies by the time the chorus kicks in and a great lead guitar part make this one to remember. It reminds me a touch of Hello if they had a more punky sound.

Five Dollar Shoes-Your Rock'n'Roll Band

I never thought that the day would come where I would actually go to a Kiss fansite, but Kissfaq.com actually had some interesting info on the LP that 5$S recorded before this great track....

Is alleged to features Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley on backing vocals, BUT this has not been substantiated. Five dollar Shoes was: Gregg Diamond (drums, percussion, vocals), Tom Graves (keyboards, vocals), Jim Gregory (bass, vocals), Mike Millius (harmonica, vocals), and Scott Woody (guitar, vocals).

Now I'm not gonna hold the possible Kiss connection against 'em, because this one great track! T-Rex female backin' vocals, check, Dolls-ey style boogie, 'nother check, and one cool-ass chord progression (you'll know what I mean when ya' hear it).

Honky Tonk-All The Young Dudes/Pear On An Apple Tree

Up next is a 45 that I came across thru a comp I recieved a while back called Glammish Rockish Vol 1. Honky Tonk was TV composer Ed Welch tryin' to crack in to the mainstream with a pretty faithful recreation of the classic All The Young Dudes. You may also know Mr. Welch as the producer for the fab Teddy Palmer and The Rumble Band's Teddy Bear. The B-Side is another fine stomper that reminds me a bit of Kid Dynamite's Sunshine Superman. So for the first time, Here's the A and B side of a vastly unknown gem.

Aunt Helen-Big Money

Here is one from my backyard of Buffalo,New York. I don't think that many have heard this one, unless it's on some comp. (I heard it goes for around $500 US.)

It's in a US Glam vein, somewhere in The Hollywood Brats/Alice Cooper /Rags /Dolls family, although it is more punky than these acts. But check out the cover, they are definately all Glammed up for it. They went on to form The New Toys after this, who have a CD out now. The other side is just straight ahead punk, so I'm not gonna post it, at least "Big Money" still has the boogie thing going on.

Jeff Phillips-Yesterday's Hero

Double shot of Glam today to start off the new month.

This one is another cover of the Vanda/Young Glam-Pop Number Yesterday's Hero, by Jeff Phillips. The only info I could find about one Mr. Phillips looking thru some old Aussie Music papers is that I believe he was a TV presenter in the Late 60's/Early 70's down under. This one like John Paul Young's smash hit version came from Australia, so I'm guessing that is what relegated this nice stab at it to the clearance racks. Complete with Radio announcer interludes and crisp production, every fan of this song should check it out. I don't know how rare this one is exactly, but I've only ever seen one picture sleeve and I snatched it up from No Brains.

Teddy Bear-Teddy Palmer & The Rumble Band

Here is another great thudding Glam Stomper. Teddy Palmer was a hit in Ireland and for some odd reason Toronto, Ontario as well (Only two hours away from me!). He even hopped the Atlantic to play a show at the Maple Leaf Ballroom in Toronto in 1972.

Also, all you Ravers out there, let me know how this sounds. I just picked up the Numark TTUSB Turntable and I think the sound has drastically improved over my first few rips.
I wanna know what ya' think.

Screemer-In The City

Fronted by former student of Lindsey Kemp, Screemer was just too late to hit it big, if they had hit in '73 or '74 who knows what kind of great records they could of put out.

This is the A-Side to Screemer's second single, called In The City, that was put out on Arista in 1977.

It has a much different sound than the song they are known for, Interplanetary Twist, which can be found on the great compilation on Cherry Red Records, Boobs: The Junkshop Glam Discotheque. It seems to me like they knew they had to go a different direction after the flop of their first single on Bell and this was it. It's a much more stripped down affair, but still has it's own unique charm. Much less Glam then their last outing, but it still a great song that could of fit on T. Roth and Another Pretty Face's Face Facts album.

Wowii-Hoods

Now here is one of my absolute favorite tracks, bar none. This is Hoods by Wowii.

They were formed out of the ashes of another band called The Queens Kidds (which is a great name! Can't imagine what their stuff sounds like!) and then they went on to form Rufus, and eventually changed it to Wowii. They played at 'The Place' and other South Florida venues, and then went off to New York City to make it big. It never happened for 'em, but they did get quite a big following, all over the north east, with their fan club being run out of Rochester, New York of all places (only about an hour away from where I live.) They played a bunch with T. Roth and Another Pretty Face, as well as the Ric Rivets band, The Brats (which I will post soon). They were even mentioned in a Tiger Beat-like mag in the late 70's, where this picture is from, supposedly. Apparently a little later on in the 80's, The Cars even nicked a song from 'em and it ended up gettin' the guys some cash for their troubles. Good for them, cuz they deserve it after writing a song like this. Apparently they reunited at least once, back in 2003. More info to come when I find some.

You may think that they look a bit to "80's" but one listen to their masterpiece "Hoods" and you can tell who they were influenced by. Somewhere between the lyrical ability of Bowie and the sounds of the street like The Dolls is where these boys fall. Pounding drums, cheesy synths in the same vein of Lemming ring in the new wave my brothers. Brilliant lyrics and a great guitar figure put this at the upper echelon of American Glam, hell Glam period. This is the real deal brothers and sisters, To me?, I rank this one higher than even All The Young Dudes, This the cream of the crop right here. Do yourself a favor and download this track now. NOW!!

Hooray for all the fools of Rebellion! Like Ol' Blue Eyes, James Dean, Billy Martin (??), and Elvis! Hooray For The Hoods! Society labeled them no good, but what else can they do? The alternatives are so few? Hooray For the Hoods! But to protest and reject societies wasted ways man. That ain't nothin' new, their as ancient as fire and as potent as youth! Hooray For the Hoods! Indigo Blue-20th Century Boy

This one comes off an album from the Million Copy Hit Records Made Famous By.... Series. This one in particular has a side of T. Rex and Slade and Sweet on the other. The T. Rex songs are performed by a band called Indigo Blue. I'm assuming that they are just a session band (which is scary in it's own right), but does anyone have any more information about 'em?

Ok, I hope some of ya' out here have never heard this "gem" before. The lead guitar throughout the song is laughably bad, the singing could be better, but I can't stop listening to this version.

Flintlock-Freeloader

Yeah, I know not the most hard to find 45 on the scene, but still kick-ass none the less.

First, a history lesson for the uninitiated (from wikipedia) :

Flintlock were a 70s pop group from Essex, England. Its members were: Derek Pascoe (vocals), Mike Holoway (drums/percussion), Jamie Stone (bass), John Summerton (guitar) and Bill Rice (keyboards). The group came to national attention in the mid-Seventies through regular appearances on the British childrens' TV programmes You Must Be Joking and Pauline's Quirkes. They had one British Top 30 single, Dawn, in the summer of 1976. Mike Holoway also became known as an actor in the childrens' TV drama programme The Tomorrow People, in which Flintlock made a single appearance (in the Series 5 episode The Heart of Sogguth ).
